Wednesday: Keep up the good work Alex. Ye-ah.

A few months ago, I discovered that my computer will read my book out loud. Now, when I get through editing a section, I’ll hand it over to Alex, my preferred system voice. He does a good job.

At my last residency, professors emphasized the need to not only read your work, but hear it, so I started recording myself. But, ten pages into I was hoarse and irritated by my voice. So, I turned to Alex.

He can be a little dry at times, and insists on pronouncing “Yeah” as if it were a two-syllable word. But he’s been an invaluable asset to my editing process. When I’m listening to my chapters in someone else’s voice, they become unfamiliar, and I can hear where my writing gets boring, or where I have put too many “I said’s,” in a row.

Thanks to Alex and the other system voices, writing has become a little less lonely.
