Friday: Reordering the first chapters

This week, an agent told me that I needed to start my story in a completely different place.  I don’t know if she’s the first person whose told me this, or the first person who I’ve listened to, but I’ve spent the whole week moving things around.

It was a really long week.

I have to say that I feel different.  I think some of the anxiety that I was feeling about the process had to do with knowing that my first few chapters weren’t quite right, but not knowing what to do about it.

I can say now that I’m cautiously confident about this new opening.  Whenever I look at it, it feels unfamiliar, which is an exciting change.  I feel like I’ve written a whole new book!

  1. Isn’t it amazing when that happens! I’ve rearranged my whole beginning, too… I did it a little differently and added things. It’s still not right. I don’t feel even “cautiously” confident… but it’s getting there. And it’s an improvement. Always an improvement.

Good job and keep up the good work!
