Tuesday: Agent Day #3

Today, I’m sending out my third round of queries to agents.  Agent Day #1 was back in November, and Agent Day #2 was January 10th.  I send out 3 queries at a time, for no real reason other than that 3 sounds like a good number.

I do feel like I’m missing some key understanding about this whole process.  Sometimes I think that maybe it’s more like hunting for a job than I realize.  Maybe the people who find success in their search are those type A’s who dog the receptionists at their literary agencies of choice until they get through to the president.  Or, maybe I should change my last name to Franzen and swear that I’m the estranged daughter of the bestseller.

Every time I read my query letter, I’m intensely interested, and I think my novel’s first few chapters are the best versions of themselves.  If three is in fact a lucky number, maybe today is my day.

  1. Querying agents is more time consuming than writing and revising. Just wondering – have you had your ms professionally edited?

    • I know it really is! I have experienced more angst over my query letter than during the process of writing the whole novel. I am in the middle of an MFA program so my novel has be heavily workshopped, but I never thought to have it professionally edited. Do you have experience with that?

  2. No, but I’ve been thinking about it. I’ve heard that you shouldn’t, and I’ve heard that you should. Depends on who you talk to!

Then just last night I read an old post on the Query Shark site, and she said none of her authors have ever had their MS professionally edited before querying. So that pushes me closer to No. 🙂

Good luck with your querying. I’m about to start again soon. Blah.
