Thursday: Planning is writing, and so is staring at the walls

I’ve reached another one of those points where I need to stop and think about what I’m revising. I’m getting ready to go through the last 100 pages of my novel, but I’m realizing that there are things that I wanted this book to do that it hasn’t yet, and that the conflicts of these last several chapters might resolve themselves a little too quickly.

Writing goals and self-inflicted deadlines are good, but I’ve also found that it’s important to know when to break them.  I’ve lost so many hours trying to write when I knew I just wasn’t ready.

So, right now what I’m doing is taking notes.  One of my main character’s obsessions is color, so I’m researching that.  I’m going through all old notes on earlier plot ideas I had for the book, just to make sure I don’t miss anything.  I’m also rearranging the notecards I have on the wall in front of my desk.  I’ve even put some on my lamp!

  1. Color. Interesting. I once heard said that a guys color spectrum is very narrow. Look at the colors they wear. Yet a woman’s is much broader. Hopefully your character in the novel is a woman.
