Tuesday: It’s Alive!

Ok, so I’ve been rushing.  I’ve been so focused on publishing, that I’ve forgotten (pls. excuse the cliche) the heart of my book.

Wait–maybe I should take that back.  I’m not sure that I’m really talking about the “heart” of my book.  I don’t know that my book has a heart.  Or if it does, I don’t know that I can identify it.  Or, if I can identify it, I would identify it as something different each day, so that its heart is not a static thing, but something that changes with its reader, and its reader’s mental state/mood.

Instead, maybe I should say that I’ve forgotten to make the circulatory system of my book complete.  There are veins, yes, but maybe they don’t go as far as they could.  Perhaps they dead end in places like the elbows or the hips when really they should extend through, enervating my book’s limbs all the way down to its toes so that it can be as close to a living, breathing thing as 400 pages of writing can be.

Here’s what I’m trying to say:

Plot? Check

Characters? Check

Plot that moves the Characters in an interesting way? Check

Characters that move the Plot in an interesting way?  Yes!  Jesus.

That extra layer that makes the book unique from all others?  The texture that creates the book’s aesthetic?  The details that make the world of my characters complete, so that people on transatlantic flights can forget where they are?

Sort of.
