Friday: Who is my audience?

This question depresses me a bit, because I don’t know many people who read fiction.  I think this has something to do with living in California.  Books pair best with cold cloudy days, I think. Go Portland!

I’m not sure that I have a grasp on who makes up the modern audience.  One creative writing professor told me that something like 80% of novel readers are middle aged women.  If this is true, this also depresses me.

It seems like my generation (X? Y? the people in their late twenties, early thirties) tend towards being both self involved (myself included in a major way–see domain name above) and hyper competitive, two traits that can’t make for the ideal reader.

I thought about this while driving, which is when I feel most at odds with the general public.  How could this person who gestures obscenities after drifting into my lane be a part of my readership?
